BAY AREA REPORTER, based in San Francisco, won multiple awards at the CALIFORNIA NEWS PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION’s Awards on July 13, 2024. Assistant editor MATTHEW S. BAJKO took second place in the community focus awards section. Assistant editor JOHN FERRANNINI received a fourth place award in the enterprise news story category. In the feature division, Ferrannini took fifth place. Freelance arts reporter MICHAEL FLANAGAN Michael Flanagan received a second place award in the film and TV writing category. ROBERT BROKI, a freelance writer, received fourth and fifth place in fine arts reporting category. Freelance writer TIM PFAFF received second place in the music writing category.
THE BUCKEYE FLAME, based in the Cleveland, Ohio, metro area, announced that BEN JODWAY will be its new reporter, covering rural LGBTQ communities across the state.
GAY CITY NEWS, based in New York City, announced the opening for nominations of its annual Impact Awards. This year, the awards ceremony will be held November 21, 2024, at Terrace on the Park in Queens. GED (GAY ENTERTAINMENT DIRECTORY) MAGAZINE, based in Los Angeles, entered its 12th year of publication with its June 2024 issue.
ISABEL MATA, columnist for SGN (SEATTLE GAY NEWS), ended her ASK IZZY column in the newspaper’s May 3, 2024, issue.
OUTSFL, based in Wilton Manors, Fla., announced that its second annual Your Choice Awards are open for nominations through August 7, 2024.
OUTSMART, based in Houston, Tex., entered its 31st year of publication with its June 2024 issue.
RAGE MONTHLY, based in San Diego, Calif., celebrated its 17th anniversary in its June 2024 issue.
MARY RASURA, editor of Florida Atlantic University’s OutFAU based in Boca Raton, was named a finalist in three categories in the annual Sunshine State Awards, including College Journalist of the Year for her work at OutFAU and Wilton Manors-based Out SFL. Rasura is also a finalist in the Sports Story and General News Story categories.
SGN, based in Seattle, was feted by the Seattle Public Library’s downtown Central Library with a public reception on Jun 27, 2024, introducing its exhibit “Celebrating 50 years of the Seattle Gay News.” The exhibit ran through July.
WATERMARK, based in Orlando, Fla., has been named the 2024 Small Business Partner of the Year at the 12th Annual Diversity Lunch & Awards put on by the LGBT+ Center of Orlando on July 26, 2024. The newspaper also launched its 30th anniversary celebration in its July 4, 2024, issue.
KATHI WOLFE, a longtime contributor to the WASHINGTON BLADE as well as an award-winning poet, died June 22, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. She was 71. A virtual celebration of life was scheduled for July 6.
