BAY AREA REPORTER, based in San Francisco, entered its 53rd year of publication with its January 5, 2023, issue.
BETWEEN THE LINES, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., entered its 31st year of publication with its January 12, 2023, issue.
THE BLADE FOUNDATION last month announced the recipient of a new 12-week fellowship focused on covering issues of interest to queer youth in Washington, D.C. WINTER HAWK, a senior majoring in multi-platform journalism at the University of Maryland College Park, was named recipient of the fellowship, which is funded by a grant from the D.C. Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs. Hawk’s work will be featured in the WASHINGTON BLADE and she will be mentored by Blade editors and reporters. Also, the Washington Blade welcomed a new winter intern, ANDRÉS JOVÉ RODRÍGUEZ, a third-year student at the University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo. He is majoring in tele-radio communications with an emphasis on news, production and direction. Rodríguez is interning with the Washington Blade this semester as part of a continued partnership with the WASHINGTON CENTER.
CAMP REHOBOTH, the community organization that among other things publishes LETTERS FROM CAMP REHOBOTH, last month announced its search for a new executive director. The new candidate will replace LISA EVANS, who has been serving as interim director since the previous executive director, DAVID MARINER, left the position to start a new Delaware LGBTQ advocacy group called SUSSEX PRIDE.
THE CHICAGO READER, the city’s alternative weekly that is now home to a quarterly supplement of WINDY CITY TIMES, has hired media strategist and nonprofit executive SOLOMON LIEBERMAN as its new CEO and publisher. He takes over from TRACY BAIM, who announced her intention to leave last summer. Baim, a co-founder of Windy City Times, has served as Chicago Reader publisher since 2018.
EQUALPRIDE, which publishes THE ADVOCATE, OUT, OUT TRAVELER PLUS and PRIDE.COM), named NEAL BROVERMAN as its new editorial director this past October. He replaces DIANE ANDERSON-MINSHALL, who left the company last fall. Also, the company last month named DESIREE GUERRERO as The Advocate’s new editor in chief.
GAY CITY NEWS, based in New York City, entered its 22nd year of publication with its January 12, 2023, issue.
THE GAZETTE, a supplement of SOUTH FLORIDA GAY NEWS covering the communities of Wilton Manors and Oakland Park, entered its 10th year of publication with its January 5, 2023, issue.
GRAB MAGAZINE, based in Chicago, entered its 14th year of publication with its January 3, 2023, issue.
NORM KENT, founder of SOUTH FLORIDA GAY NEWS, received the WILTON MANORS BUSINESS ASSOCIATION’s Lifetime Business Award during a January 26, 2023, ceremony. Going forward, the honor will be named the Norman Elliot Kent Excellence in Business Leadership Award.
THE LOS ANGELES BLADE entered its seventh year of publication with its January 6, 2023, issue.
OUTPOST, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., entered its 31st year of publication with its January 2023 issue.
PHILADELPHIA GAY NEWS, as part of the local journalism collective EVERY VOICE, EVERY VOTE, hosted a forum on January 23, 2023, with all 10 current candidates for mayor of Philadelphia. The newspaper also entered its 47th year of publication with its January 6, 2023, issue.
PRAYERS FOR BOBBY, written by journalist and NLGJA: THE ASSOCIATION OF LGBTQ JOURNALISTS founder LEROY AARONS, has been released as an audiobook for the first time. Telling the true story of LGBTQ youth rights activist MARY GRIFFITH, the audiobook is read by openly gay actor WENTWORTH MILLER. It includes a new afterword by BRIAN K. BOND, executive director of PFLAG NATIONAL.
PRIDE TRAVEL NETWORK, an extension of PRIDE JOURNEYS TRAVEL DIRECTORY, was launched last month by JOEY AMATO. The new venture will offer additional marketing and promotional benefits to participants in the directory. For more information, go to PrideJourneys.com.
SFGN (SOUTH FLORIDA GAY NEWS), based in Wilton Manors, Fla., won two awards from the FLORIDA PRESS CLUB’s 2022 Excellence in Journalism Competition. SFGN took first place in the newsletter category; KIM SWAN and AVRAHAM FORREST, who launched the ISLANDER newsletter, were named on the award. JULIE PALMER, the newspaper’s art director, won third place in the front-page design category. The newspaper also entered its 14th year of publication with its January 5, 2023, issue.
SGN (SEATTLE GAY NEWS) entered its 51st year of publication with its January 6, 2023, issue.
SWERV, based in Upper Marlboro, Md., celebrated its 15th anniversary in its January/February 2023 issue.
THE WASHINGTON BLADE entered its 54th year of publication with its January 6, 2023, issue.
WATERMARK, based in Orlando, Fla., entered is 30th year of publication with its January 5, 2023, issue.
