BALTIMORE OUTLOUD has won a Best of Gay Maryland award. For the second consecutive year, the newspaper has won first place in the Favorite Newspaper, Blog or Information Resource category. The awards, known as the Argies, are co-sponsored by THE WASHINGTON BLADE.
BAY WINDOWS, based in Boston, entered its 31st year of publication with its Dec. 13, 2012, issue.
BOSTON SPIRIT MAGAZINE entered its ninth year of publication with its January/February 2013 issue.
COMPETE, the sports magazine based in Tempe, Ariz., entered its seventh year of publication with its January 2013 issue.
ECHO MAGAZINE, based in Phoenix, Ariz., has announced a number of staffing changes. News and feature writer RICHARD SCHULTZ will be adding the theater beat, replacing NEIL COHEN, who recently passed away. CHRIS CARPENTER, who writes movie features for Southern California-based RAGE MONTHLY, will be doing the same at Echo. HANS PEDERSEN is also being added to the entertainment/movie beat.
GAY CITY NEWS, based in New York City, entered its 12th year of publication with its Jan. 2, 2013, issue.
GAY SAN DIEGO entered its fourth year of publication with its Jan. 11, 2013, issue.
GLOSS MAGAZINE, based in San Francisco, entered its 11th year of publication with its Jan. 11, 2013, issue.
GRAB MAGAZINE, based in Chicago, entered its fourth year of publication with its Jan. 1, 2013, issue.
INSTINCT, based in Los Angeles, celebrated its 15th anniversary with its November 2012 issue.
GENE JANOWSKI, long-time Chicago-based journalist and activist, died on Nov. 23, 2012. He was 68. During his career, he designed the website and Pride Guide for PRIDEChicago. He also worked for GAYLIFE newspaper, WINDY CITY TIMES and GAY CHICAGO MAGAZINE.
METROSOURCE, based in New York City, entered its 24th year of publication with its February/March 2013 issue.
Q NOTES, based in Charlotte, N.C., has changed its street date from Saturdays to Fridays.
QUEST, based in Green Bay, Wisc., entered its 20th year of publication with its January 2013 issue.
ELIJAH SARKESIAN is the new editor in chief of DAVID ATLANTA. He replaces MAXIMILLIAN CORWELL, who resigned at the end of 2012.
MARK SEGAL, founder and publisher of PHILADELPHIA GAY NEWS, has been elected to the board of the PENNSYLVANIA NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION. He will serve a two-year term on the 28-member board.
THE WASHINGTON BLADE, based in Washington, D.C., entered its 44th year of publication with its Jan. 4, 2013, issue.
