THE BUCKEYE FLAME, based outside Cleveland, Ohio, announced a matching fundraising campaign. Through the end of the year, every dollar up to $15,000 donated will be matched by NEWSMATCH, a collaborative fundraising group supporting independent public service journalism. In addition, the first $3,000 raised will be tripled, thanks to the RURAL PARTNER FUND.

TED FANG, the openly gay former publisher of the SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER, passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 61. He is survived by his husband of 27 years, TONY THOMPSON.

GREG JEU, editor and publisher of Houston-based OUTSMART MAGAZINE, received the Montrose Center’s 2024 Community Vision Award at an October 5 ceremony. 

“Last Call South Florida” co-written by OutSFL’s Rick Karlin

RICK KARLIN, arts and culture editor of Wilton Manors-based OutSFL, celebrated the release of his new book, “Last Call South Florida: A History of 1,001 LGBTQ-Friendly Taverns, Hang-Outs & Haunts,” at a book signing on October 15, 2024. Karlin co-wrote the book with FRED FEJES, a former Florida Atlantic University professor and an expert on queer history in Florida.

THE NORM KENT LIFETIME BUSINESS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, named for the co-founder and longtime publisher of the now-defunct SOUTH FLORIDA GAY NEWS in Wilton Manors, was awarded to GLEN WEINZIMER, creator of the SMART Ride, a charity bike ride for HIV/AIDS organizations, at a ceremony on  October 14, 2024. The award was created last year, and Kent was its first recipient. This was the first time the award was presented since Kent’s death last year.

NEWS IS OUT, a collaborative of several legacy LGBTQ newspapers, held a virtual event on October 23, 2024, about Project 2025 and how it could affect LGBTQ communities. The event was hosted by DANA PICCOLI, News Is Out’s managing director, and CHRISTOPHER KANE, the WASHINGTON BLADE’s White House reporter.

OUT FRONT MAGAZINE, based in Denver, handed over the reigns of its October 2024 issue to SUSPECT PRESS, which was a quarterly literary magazine until it folded in 2020. Out Front acquired the rights to the name and plans to eventually resurrect the magazine. Until then, every October will feature queer horror fiction.

THE WASHINGTON BLADE celebrated its 55th anniversary at its 2024 Best of LGBTQ D.C. Awards Party on October 17.
